The Top 8 Beauty Mistakes You've Probably Made

No matter how beauty savvy you are, there are beauty mistakes that are easy to make. Sometimes it can be accidental, and other times its due to laziness.

Here are the (or my) top 8 beauty mistakes...

1. Not Exfoliating
Exfoliation is a huge part of our beauty routine. Without weekly exfoliation, dead skin cells will just congest your skin making it dry and patchy. Any products you use won't be able to be absorbed properly either. The older you are the more you need to exfoliate as your skin cells start to turn over slower.

2. Wearing the wrong colour foundation/concealer/powder
This is such an easy mistake to make. The lights in stores are completely different from natural light and your bathroom lights. What looks like a match, suddenly makes you look like you applied your foundation in the dark.  To stop this from happening, you can either mix the foundation with a lighter/darker one to make it suit your complexion. Or get the make up artist to do your foundation first then go out into sunlight to check it before getting your concealer/powder/bronzer applied.

3. DIY glowing skin that turns greasy
On the quest for glowing skin, it's easy to go overboard. Using a luminous primer, a glowy foundation and a highlighter can make you go from glowy healthy skin, into a shiny disco ball. An all over illuminating look can draw more attention to imperfections, so stick to the inner corners of the eye and highlighting the cheekbones to stop looking greasy. Also less is more!

4. Over plucking
Once you start tweezing your eyebrows, it's easy to get carried away. Suddenly you have no brows! One way of stopping this is to take a step back from the mirror every 3 plucks. Yes, it will take you longer but at least you'll be left with brows!!

5. Flaky lips
Flaky lips is the quickest way to ruin a lip look. Either rub a toothbrush over your lips, or a face cloth to quickly exfoliate them. This will make lip products (especially lipstick which can be drying) look incredible rather than infected.

6. Crusty, clumpy lashes
In the quest for long, luscious eye lashes it's easy to go overboard. Always remember to remove the previous days application before applying any more. Apply a new coat onto an old one will just make it clumpy. Also make sure if you apply false lashes that they aren't to obvious. Instead of natural looking long lashes, it will just look like there is a spider sitting on your eye.

7. Wearing too much perfume
This is such a simple one to do. You spray some perfume on and after a while your nose gets used to the smell and suddenly you can't smell it anymore. So just before you go out you spray some more on. Once you're in the car, the perfume is overpowering and you realise just how much you are actually wearing.

8. Fake tan terror
Luckily formulas are much better now than they were when I was a teen. Back in the 90s and 2000s, tanning was popular and there were many girls walking around with bad fake tans. Streaky, orange and patchy. To stop this, make sure your body is exfoliated. Apply moisturiser to dry parts of your body, like elbows and knees, to stop is getting patchy.

What are your beauty mistakes?

  3. I am very sure I've been guilty of #2 before and I'm definitely guilty of #5! I have naturally dry lips and am always using lip balm/exfoliating (I give them a gentle brush every morning in the shower), but there will also be times you just run out of time!

    1. I think the worst is when your busy at work and can't get to your lip balm. I get so embarrassed talking to customers with dry lips

  4. I've been guilty of number 2 pretty recently. A sales assistant helped me choose the 'perfect colour' for my skin which looked great in the lighting at the shop but as soon as I got home I realised how wrong it was! The foundation was pink based rather than having a yellow base which suits me better. I really regret that purchase but now I know that I should step into the sunlight before making a purchase because shop lighting is so misleading.

    1. Ohhhh no :( It's such a shame as it's a waste of money. Could you get a darker colour and mix it to suit your skintone?

  6. I've done number two. It was the bellapiere girls who have a stand in a shopping centre and the girl said "you're wearing the wrong foundation for your skin" so I said "well you're the one who chose it for me 2 weeks ago."

I ended up with a new foundation for free and never went back!

Not only was I insulted but she insulted herself.

Softlips do a great lip scrub!

  7. I feel like I used to do many of these things when I was younger, but have really learnt not to do any of them anymore- you're right that eyelashes need to look anything but clumpy! x

    1. Sorry Lisa, I won't be there. It's so hard to get to any PR/blogger things in the weekday since I have my little girl. Have a great time! I hope to hear about it on your blog. :)

  9. I laughed so much at some of the memories you brought back, especially the fake tan one! I always find once I have put perfume on I can never notice it so I wonder how anyone else will know I am wearing it! I also really hate ckumpy lashes, I am so so picky when it comes to Mascara, I want to look like Bambi!

    1. I'm super fussy too! I'm still yet to find the perfect mascara. I think Dior mascaras are amazing, but a little too expensive for me to get every 3 months :(

  10. Im just left laughing at your funny anecdotes..I've done most of these mistakes in my college days when I easily overdid my makeup. My biggest blunder was the thick foundation until I switched to sheer ones that disappear into the face and add an instant glow.

    1. I think when your younger you use foundation as a mask. Luckily you learn quicker, that sheer looks better :)
