How To: Get A Gorgeous Smile And Healthy Teeth

Tuesday, 23 October 2012

Having healthy teeth not only gives you a bright smile, but keeps you from nasty infections, painful teeth and cavities.

Here are some ways which you can protect and look after your teeth...

Be careful what you eat. You know things like coffee, soft drinks, fruit juice and sugar are bad for your teeth, but did you know that tomatoes are acidic and contribute to acid erosion? Wine can also contribute to erosion of the enamel.

Brush twice a day. If you have sensitive teeth, remember to use a toothpaste for sensitivity. A whitening toothpaste is a great DIY way of getting brighter and whiter teeth.

Replace your toothbrush every 2-3 months.

Wait 30 minutes after eating and drinking before brushing your teeth. If you brush your teeth after drinking a soft drink you will actually be pushing the acids from the drink further into your teeth. Your saliva will get rid of the acids naturally, but you can also rinse your mouth out with water.

Using floss is fantastic as it gets into places where a toothbrush can't.

Don't forget to brush your tongue!

To prevent cavities, make you use a fluoride mouthwash. Fluoride helps to strengthen tooth enamel, which helps protect your teeth from food acids.

Have a annual check up at the dentist. This way you can stop any nasties from developing.

Be careful kissing someone that has cavities. You can increase your risk of cavities from the bacteria from their mouth .

Here are some of my favourite products to use for healthy teeth...

Pearl Drops Gloss Tooth Whitener
This is a fantastic toothpaste that can help to make your teeth up to 4 shades lighter. I love the "Shade Guide" on the box. I've used this on and off for quite a few years and always go back to it. Colgate Max White is also great.

Listerine "Total Care Enamel Defense"*

This mouthwash has six benefits...
Repairing and strengthening tooth enamel
Repairing damage caused by acid attack
Killing bacteria that can cause cavities
Reducing plaque between the teeth
Preventing tartar to keep teeth naturally white
Repairing weak spots to stop the onset of cavities

Beware this is powerful!! You're supposed to hold this in your mouth for 30 seconds...I'm lucky to get to 20 seconds! I love that it has multiple benefits, so I don't have to use multiple mouth washes. It also comes in a big bottle, which lasts a long time.

Reach "Cleanburst Spearmint Waxed Floss"*
I really love this minty floss to help get into those hard to reach places. The packaging is perfect for keeping in your bag, so you're not stuck with food between your teeth after lunch.

What's your favourite toothpaste? Do you use a whitening one like I do?

  1. I absolutely love the Listerine. A while ago, there was no way I could handle it, but after going to the dentist and realising what was happening with my teeth, I've taken a lot of special care now and hold out for the 30 seconds!
I might give that first toothpaste a go though, sounds nice! :)

    1. Hmmmm, i know it can only whiten your teeth so much, so maybe you've whitened it as much as is possible?

  3. Whitening toothpaste is actually really bad for your teeth! What it does is strip the enamel from your teeth to make them whiter. It's seriously no good for your teeth.

And using a soft toothbrush instead of a medium is also really good!

    1. Hmmmmm, while it might not be the best idea I do a lot of things that are bad for me like bleaching my hair, wearing heels, etc. Vanity is sometimes worth it ;)

  4. Good tips! After having spent almost $8000 at the dentist end of last year/early this year, I am very good at looking after my teeth! Every time I think, "can't be bothered brushing" before bed, dollar signs flash in my head and I'm up brushing straight away!

    1. I'm sure you look after your teeth like they are made of gold hahaha Even though you've spent a lot of money, it's totally worth it! While all your friends are getting dentures, you'll have beautiful teeth ;)
