Pro's In The Know: Interview With Hairdresser Extraordinaire Barney Martin

Thursday, 1 August 2013

Hi Beauties!

I have a very exciting new post for you! Unlike celebs, the rest of us don't have access to well known pro's! Luckily, the next best thing is an interview (via email) with hairdresser Barney Martin.

Hairdressing's in Barney's blood. His mother, father, grandmother and aunt are all in the business, so it was inevitable that he would follow their lead. His work has been seen in the pages on Vogue as well as on runways in Fashion Week. He has his own salon, as well as being a Pantene ambassador.

Now onto the interview...

Welcome Barney to Bottled Beauty! Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, and also giving me and my readers your expert hair advice! Onto the question.

What's the number one thing that most people do wrong to their hair?
I always see people putting their hair through intense heat styling without enough breaks or treatment masks. Their hair lacks shine and body, so try to give your hair a rest from the heat styling a few days a week and use a dry shampoo for longer lasting style.

How do we get salon glossy hair at home?
Blow dry hair when it’s wet and towel dried, instead of letting it air dry for a while. Use a heat protector spray and blow dry hair in sections with a round brush.

What are the hottest hair styles/cuts right now?
Super short like Charlize Theron  or paige boypixie like Anne Hathaway
Long and layered with an eyelash grazing fringe like Jessica Biel which is inspired by Jane Birkin
Delta Goodrem's dishevelled bob
Nicole Richie graduated bob with soft invisible layers, tousled
Medium length and layered at the front like Rachael Bilson
A low slung slick ponytail

If I'm on a budget, what's better to spend my money on.... a haircut or hair products?
If your hair is in need of a refresher and looking dull with split ends, a haircut will put your hair on the right track, which will mean you don’t have to spend as much on products. If you’re on a budget, a shampoo, conditioner and treatment mask that are right for your hair type are the three essentials.

Pantene Styling Treatment
Foam Soft

What's one styling product that you can't live without?
Pantene Styling Treatment Foam Soft Curls. It’s a great base for creating a bouncy blow dry or tousled waves.

What's a great easy hairstyle for us lazy girls that rely on a pony tail too much?
Low slung ponytails are in at the moment, and are really easy to create.
Plait down the back or worn slightly to the side with pieces around the face out are great.
Pulling back the front two sections of hair and securing off the face to the sides of head with bobby pins.
All these are great styles for keeping your hair out of the way if you’re on the run and don’t have time for a full style.

Pantene 6 Week Colour
Protect Treatment Program

What products do you recommend for dry, damaged hair?
Dry, damaged hair need products with extra moisture, so I recommend using Pantene Beautiful Lengths shampoo and conditioner – the Pro-V Keratin formula helps to repair damage leaving hair soft and moisturised. For coloured hair the Pantene 6 Week Colour Protect Treatment Program is a great treatment mask specifically for coloured hair.

What's your tips (and hairstyle ideas) for someone growing out a fringe, especially when it's too long and sits over your eyes, but is too short to tuck behind your ear?
Try using bobby pins, either pinning it back or to one side. The “faux side fringe” is a popular trend at the moment as well. Take your fringe and sweep over to one side and securing with pins at the side. Use the bobby pins with the straight side facing upwards, they hold more securely this way. Distribute gel through the root area mainly around face and top, then comb back away from the face to give a modern elegant look for the evening.

If you could style anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
The Delevinge sisters, Cara & Poppy. I would like to change their look and they seem like a lot of fun.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions! With your tips, I won't be wearing a pony tail tomorrow!

...

I really hope that you enjoyed the interview, and hopefully picked up a tip or two!

Barney has his own salon here in Australia. For those lucky Sydneysiders, his salon is in Surry Hills. You can see his website here, which includes all the information you need about the hairdressers that work there, the price list and location.

If you could ask Barney any hair question, (besides "Please help me, my hair's a mess!!!") what would it be?
