The Best Of French Skincare: My Favourite Micellar Waters

Micellar waters have only become mainstream in the last year or 2. I know the first time I really had heard about them and saw them in action was on Lisa Eldridge's youTube channel

Previously, micellar waters were used more by professional make up artists. They quickly, easily and gently remove make up. They work on all skintones and the best part about them is that you don't need water.

The product + a make up pad is all you need.

Luckily they've become much more popular and also much easier to purchase recently.

Bioderma Crealine H20*

It wouldn't be a post without mentioning the Bioderma micellar water. It's by far without a doubt the most famous and loved micellar water.

The great thing about this is that it's great for every skin type. No matter if you are dry, normal or even sensitive, this will work for you.

It's gentle, but still effective enough that it removes waterproof formulas. You can even use this on your eyes to remove mascara. Just hold the make up pad over your closed eyes for 30-60 seconds, and then gently wipe away to remove eye make up.

It doesn't contain fragrance or alcohol, which is why it's great for sensitive skin.

The 250ml bottle retails for $29.95. Bioderma is available in Australia online from Adore Beauty. It's available instore at Terry White Chemists and is making its way into Priceline stores throughout October.

Guinot One Step Cleansing Water*

This is probably my favourite out of the 3. It has a gorgeous scent and works so quickly and easily. I find that my skin feels so soft and smooth after using it. I love that it doesn't make my skin feel dry after using it. I do find that it can sting my sensitive eyes, so I prefer to use a sensitive eye make up remover for removing my eye make up. This is free of soap, alcohol and parabens.

Guinot create their products in more of a scientific and medical way of thinking. Their skincare products are "prescribed" to customers to suit their specific needs, instead of lumping people into the dry/normal/oily skin category.

While Guinot has been around since 1963, it isn't a brand that I see on a lot of on blogs and youTube. There products are sold at spas and salons, which is why it may not be as easily accessible for people.

You can find stockists here.

Avene Micellar Lotion

This was the very first micellar water that I bought. Avene is so easy for me to buy since it's stocked at many chemists, Priceline and Chemist Warehouse. At the time I bought it, it was on special for $23 and was cheaper compared to Bioderma. But since Bioderma has had a price drop and is easily available here in Australia, I can now pick a micellar water based on personal preference, rather than accessibility.

It works quickly and easily. It contains their Thermal Spring Water, which is great for the skin and is so soothing.

This retails for $34.95 and you get 200mls. Chemist Warehouse regularly has it on special for $5-10 cheaper.

As with all things, soon drugstore brands hop onto a trend and release their own version. I've seen that L'Oreal have released a micellar water in the UK, but there's no release date yet for Australia. You can read about it here.

La Roche-Posay Dermo Cleanser*

While this isn't a tradition micellar water, I wanted to mention the La Roche-Posay Dermo Cleanser. I use it similar to a micellar water, except because it's a cream I rub it into my skin in circular movements to break up the make up and then use a cotton pad to remove it. Even though it's a cream, you don't need to wash your face (but still can if you like). It's great for drier skin or those with sensitive skin.

I've reviewed it before here

Here in Australia, you can purchase La Roche-Posay instore and online from Priceline (here) and Terry White Chemists (here).
This retails for $22.95 for 200ml.

Are you a fan of micellar water or do you prefer make up wipes for those lazy nights?

  2. I cant wait for Bioderma to be stocked in Priceline! I only purchased it a few months back because although I'd heard so much about it, I'd always thought it was just water and that it cant be that amazing but it is! I've seen the Avene Micellar Lotion a lot but I agree, it's a bit expensive.

  4. Great post! I'm currently using Bioderma and quite like it, I would love to try Avene's though because I've been very impressed with the products I've tried from them so far.

  5. I love Bioderma Crealine and have a bottle of the Avene waiting in the backup cupboard! I love cleansing waters, I have to be careful with makeup wipes as a lot of them irritate my skin. Cleansing waters are just as easy as makeup wipes, cheaper and less irritating, so it's a win-win-win for me :)
