Reviewed: Rimmel Fresher Skin Foundation

Ever since the Rimmel Fresher Skin Foundation* was launched in the UK earlier this year I've heard a lot of polarising reviews. This seems to be a foundation that people either love or hate.

At first when I used this I didn't like it. It was extremely patchy and contained little coverage. Over the last 3 weeks I've persevered with it and through trial and error have found the best ways to make it work or me and my skin type. I have ended up really liking it and even included it in my favourites post from last month.

I have pretty normal skin. It's not really dry or oily, just somewhere in between. After using this, I would say that the foundation would suit people with oily skin. While my skin isn't dry, when I used this I found that it would show up all of these dry patches that I never knew that I had.

It's also incredibly light weight both in consistency and coverage. I have heard in some reviews of the foundation that someone people have been able to successfully build it up to medium coverage, but in my experience it just made the dry patches worse.

Because it has a light coverage, I can still see my uneven skintone and any redness. I normally will reach for my Maybelline Super Stay 24hr Concealer to help cover any redness or blemishes. If you have good skin and want a light coverage similar to a BB or CC cream then you'll love this.

While trialling it over the last 3 weeks I've tried every application possible. I've used my fingers, a brush and a sponge. I found for my skin, it worked best when I applied it with my fingers, followed by a sponge. When I tried to apply it with a buffing brush and an oval brush I found that it showed up more dry patches than it had with my fingers or a sponge

To make this foundation work for me, I really need to invest the time in skin prep. To get the best results I need to make sure that I've exfoliated that morning. I also then use a face oil instead of a cream serum. I've been using the Jurlique Herbal Recovery Antioxidant Face Oil while I've been testing the foundation. I find that it gives me enough moisture without feeling heavy or oily.

I'll use my day moisturiser and then follow up with my Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF50+ Superscreen. Surprisingly, I found that this works best when I don't use a primer at all. I had tried it with a few different primers, but they didn't work with any of them.

As you can see from the photos, it comes in a tub. I normally prefer a pump but surprisingly it hasn't annoyed me. After using it for 3 weeks, I've already used up a third of the tub. It's quite a small pot so I can see this being used up quicker than most of my other foundations. It retails for $18.95 here in Australia, so even if I have to buy a new pot every 2-3 months it's still very affordable (especially if I'm not having to buy primer!!!).

While I really like the foundation now, it took a while to work out what application and methods worked best for me. If you're interested in buying it, just be prepared that you might need to do some trialling to find out what works with your skin type, especially if your skin is on the normal to dry side.

Have you tried this foundation? Did it work or you?
Amy, XO
