BYS Berries Palette Anastasia Modern Renaissance Dupe

The Anastasia Modern Renaissance palette is one of those products that took the beauty community by surprise. Here was a palette than wasn't a nude palette that suddenly everyone needed. More and more brands are coming out with palettes that are inspired by the oranges and pinks from the MR palette and the latest one is the BYS Berries Palette.

I had heard about this on Instagram and originally while I thought it was pretty I decided I didn't need it. Then when I went to see it in person and it wasn't in store I NEEDED it!! I finally got my hands on it, so here's my review!

What I like about it...

Firstly the price is great! Kmart and Target sell this for $16 but the BYS website sells it for $19.95.

The shade range is really good. Like the MR palette, this palette has a lot of wearable shades mixed in with some bright, vibrant and more unusual shades. It has a mix of shimmers and mattes so you can create a whole eye look without having to reach for another palette or single shadow to finish off a look.

Like most affordable or drugstore palettes, the mattes aren't as beautiful as the shimmers but it's not a deal breaker. I would suggest (like when you use any affordable eyeshadow palette) to either use an eyeshadow primer or a cream base to help give pigment and lasting power to the shades.

Surprisingly I prefer the golden highlight shade "Glow" in the BYS palette than the "Primavera" shade in the Anastasia palette. Some of my other favourite shades are "Juliet" which is a beautiful pinky purple and "Antique" which is a lovely shimmery chocolate shade. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with "Berry Haze." It's that beautiful taupe shade with a hint of purple. The colour is beautiful but it's quite sheer and I have to really work at building it up. It's quite similar to the MR shade "Buon Fresco" but it's not as pigmented.

I love that the palette contains a mirror. A lot of inexpensive brands skip a mirror to keep the price down but it's a pain!! So I'm so glad to have the mirror so I can take the palette with me and check in different room how it looks under the different lights.

What I don't like about it...

There's a bit of fall out with the shades, so I'd suggest applying the eyeshadows first, then do your foundation or you'll have to remove the fall out and set under your eyes again.

And one of my pet peeves in drugstore eyeshadow palettes is the tacky, rough and outdated eyeshadow applicators that they include. This one has an 80s sponge tip eyeshadow applicator and a dual sided brush that looks like a lip brush! While the brush is soft, the shape of it is so useless. It won't blend out shades. I wish that they just ditched these. It's 2017 and most people will have at least one proper brush that they can use to apply and blend shadow. I find the Anastasia MR brush useless too, so it's not just drugstore palette brushes that fill me with range ;)

Also the packaging is bulky and awkward. It has an annoying closing mechanism. You have to put the "pegs" (see the above photo) into the holes in the bottom part of the tin to close the palette. While it keeps your palette safe from opening up in your bag, it sometimes takes a couple of tried to close the tin. I wish they had a magnetic closure instead.

So do you need this?

Honestly, if you already own the MR palette then no. But if you don't then it's a great alternative (and a lot cheaper). It would be a great palette for someone who already owns the RM palette to take on holiday. The RM palette is expensive and if you're worried about it breaking while you're travelling then this is a great alternative as it has similar colours but won't break your heart if it gets damaged.

This palette is fantastic for anyone who's new to make up or is afraid of colour. If you only wear nude and neutral shades, then this palette would be amazing to help you step out of your comfort zone without looking like a clown.

It's a great palette for under $20 but of course it's not up to the same quality as the original!

I hope that this review helped if you were on the fence with either palette!

Do you also feel rage when you see palettes with cheap brushes?

  6. I've been hearing so much about this BYS palette! I convinced myself that I didn't need the MR palette because I hardly ever reach for shades that warm but maybe I should grab this one instead! I agree about the packaging on these palettes, they can be a little finicky!

  7. I don`t have an MR palette, so this would be the perfect choise instead of it. And yes, I do feel rage for the cheap brusher.

  8. Great post. I don't have the MR one yet and this one does look like a great dupe for it but I've already got my sights set on the MR one as a treat for not failing my makeup buying ban 😂😂 x

  15. I am going to have to check out the ingredients list for the Berries palette. Last week I purchased the ABH MR palette and it turns out I am crazy allergic to it so I had to return it. That broke my heart a little because it was my first high end palette and it was beautiful but that reaction was too painful to deal with. Hopefully I am not allergic to the Berries palette and it will be a good alternative! *so hopeful*
    Thanks for the helpful review!
